Standing Seam Metal Roof on Upwey Barn

Thursday, December 5, 2013

Rodd Roofing  has been awarded the contract to install a new standing seam metal roof on the historic Upwey Barn at the Green Mountain Horse Association in Woodstock, Vermont.

Phase 1 has begun!

The Upwey Barn is listed on the State and National Registers for Historic Places as it was a part of the "Upwey Farms" complex owned by Owen Moon, Jr., established in 1910.  Throughout the years, he purchased and consolidated several surrounding farms into a large country estate.  Upwey Farms grew into one of Vermont's most important gentleman stock farms, and Moon became the country's leading breeder of Morgan and Suffolk Punch horses.  The Upwey Barn is significant architecturally as an example of a ground-level stable barn with an attached indoor riding ring.  It is also significant historically for its association with Owen Moon, Jr. and his stock breeding program.

From 1956-1980, the Upwey Farms estate housed the Woodstock Country School, a private boarding school.  The Upwey Barn was converted into classrooms and educational program space for the school, but the majority of these alterations have since been removed and the building returned to its original function as a horse barn.  Green Mountain Horse Association, Inc. has owned the Upwey Barn since 1995.  Improvements were made in 2009, which included a Visitors Center with meeting room, kitchen and bathroom facilities, utility room, storage space, and complete refurbishment of twenty horse stalls.  The indoor riding ring area is utilized for temporary stalls during GMHA's April through October event season.
